Ottawa blacklists World Tamil Movement

TORONTO — Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day announced in Toronto Monday the federal government has blacklisted the non-profit World Tamil Movement, a move he suggests sends out a strong message that Canada will not stand any support for terrorism.

But Mr. Day also acknowledged that several ongoing cases against alleged Tamil Tiger supporters and al-Qaeda sympathizers are moving very slowly – the price to be paid for living in a democracy, he said.

"We are careful about the rights of individuals and groups and that is why there is a variety of appeal processes," Mr. Day told reporters Monday.

"Sometimes that may be seen as presenting a level of frustration for those involved in the process of trying to bring people to justice [but] many times these are necessary elements to make sure rights are protected."
