Bay-Regula slams door on China

BEIJING -- The way Canadian softball coach Lori Sippel sees it, Lauren Bay-Regula is an Olympian, so we should have almost expected her to do what she did here Friday morning in a critical 2008 Olympic round-robin softball game against China.

With Canada leading 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning with the bases loaded and none out, the Trail, B.C., veteran retired three straight hitters, nailing down the win and lifting Canada to a 3-0 record and into the driver's seat for a final-four playoff spot.

"She's an Olympian," said Sippel of Bay-Regula, who went the distance, allowing just three hits and improving to 2-0 in the tournament.
