Gang member's slaying could provoke retaliation, Vancouver police say

VANCOUVER — Police have identified the victim of a brazen daylight shooting at Oakridge Mall as Rakesh Ratnam Naidu, 34, a member of the gang that calls itself the Independent Soldiers.

Retaliatory violence for the hit – carried out in an underground parking lot packed with cars and shoppers going to and from their vehicles – is a possibility, Vancouver Police Department Constable Tim Fanning said yesterday.

“One day's suspect can be tomorrow's victim, so yeah – retaliation is certainly a possibility,” Constable Fanning told reporters at a briefing.

The shooting took place just after 2 p.m. on Thursday on the first level of the underground parkade at Oakridge Mall. Witnesses described hearing between 10 and 20 shots.
